Common stock represents ownership in a company – “the issuer”. 

One share is a small slice of the company.

Because the common stock represents ownership, it’s referred to a “equity security”.

Common stock prices rise and fall – on the basis of supply and demand. Meaning prices rise when more shares are being purchased and vice versa.
